Frequently Asked Questions

Can I speak to you in a crisis?

Inner Healing Therapy is not a crisis service.  If you need urgent help please contact your GP for an emergency appointment or visit your nearest A&E service. Confidential emotional support is also available 24/7 from www.samaritans.org or by calling 116 123.

Is therapy confidential?

To meet standards set by The British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, we keep records of your treatment. These records are confidential and will only be shared if there is a concern about your safety or the safety of others.

No details of your therapy will be shared with your GP or appear on your medical records, unless there is a serious concern about your safety. Should you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask.

Can you prescribe medication?

We do not prescribe medication but can offer support and/or liaise with your GP or Psychiatrist to discuss what may be helpful for you. It may be that we find that your mood is impacting on your ability to get the most out of therapy and in cases like this, we will collaboratively work together on a plan that may include medication.

How many sessions will I need?

CBT and EMDR are not a “one size fits all” approach and we will therefore want to find out more about your difficulties. CBT and EMDR is time-limited; typically, it lasts between 5-20 sessions. However, if a problem is long-standing (has been around for many years) or you have multiple problems, therapy can last longer than 20 sessions. Duration of therapy depends on the nature of your problems and on your progress.

We will complete regular reviews of therapy with you which will allow us to determine how many sessions may be required.

How is CBT different from other therapies?

Although CBT is considered a talking therapy, it takes on more of an active approach in facilitating change, in comparison to counselling and other psychotherapeutic approaches. It is very similar to learning a skill and just with any skill, practice makes perfect.

You will take on a role of an active participant where, together with your therapist, you will develop a better understanding of your difficulties and identify strategies that will help you overcome them.

Do I need to do anything outside of sessions?

As we only have 50 minutes a week together, we recognise that a lot of the difficulties happen outside of sessions and therefore a lot of the therapeutic work will also happen outside of sessions. We will agree between session tasks or 'homework' that will be specifically and collaboratively designed with your challenges in mind, which you will go away and implement. These tasks are pertinent in being able to build and maintain change in your journey towards healing and therefore are a mandatory part of therapy.

As well as improving outcomes during therapy, it helps people learn how to become their own therapist, reducing the likelihood of the problems recurring in the future.

How often do I need to attend?

For therapy to be most effective, we will meet weekly to begin with. When you begin to notice improvement, we can discuss reducing this frequency to fortnightly.  When you feel ready to end therapy, we can plan some follow-up appointments to help you maintain the progress you have made, usually at 3 and 6 month intervals.

If you have any further queries that have not been answered here, please do not hesitate to contact us.
