The mind will organically heal itself from difficult life events and experiences we have gone through. This is called Adaptive Information Processing (AIP). Very similar to the way our body heals from physical trauma, our mind will use rapid eye movement, which takes place during REM sleep, to process memories.
However, sometimes our natural healing process can become overloaded, especially when we go through something traumatic. This can result in our memories getting stuck.
